Somatic Experiencing (SE) is designed to heal many effects of traumatic experience, whether the traumatic event was primarily emotional or physical. Emotional repercussions may be fully resolved by SE alone, or in combination with other therapies. Physical symptoms are often relieved to varying degrees, primarily those which are related to trauma-induced stress.
Before healing, stress deep in the nervous system can reinforce problematic patterns of thinking, feeling, and reacting. Chronic tensions held in the body can interfere with our health and physical comfort as well as our peace of mind.
As a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, I can help you regain a sense of safety and greater comfort, as the trauma is gradually resolved through sensory awareness, spontaneous and intentional movement, and imagery.
Specific skills of mindfulness are developed and applied in the process of Somatic Experiencing. Deeply experiencing your natural sensations — your breath, the feelings in your arms, your feet, your heart — is intrinsic to this approach. In trauma, we often fragment — splitting thoughts from feelings, numbing our sensations and our emotions, even blocking our own access to important memories and virtues (such as our courage or ability to love). I would guide you to reconnect safely with your own physical and emotional experience, and increasingly regain these vital dimensions of who you are.
